WALT DISNEY (1901-1966)
When he turned 22, he moved to Los Angeles. Here he drew cartoons in
his garage. He was absolutely fascinated by these. A cartoon is made by
drawing many pictures and showing them one after another so quickly that
the pictures become animated, or seem to move. He liked to make the characters
do funny things. A few years later, he moved to Kansas City and opened his first studio. When he was 27, he created Mickey Mouse. In his studio, mice would gather in the garbage can next to his desk. He decided to keep them for his pets. He got little cages for three of them and they lived on top of his desk. He had a particular favorite who inspired the cartoon character Mickey Mouse. During the next ten years, Walt Disney invented Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and many more cartoon characters that are famous to this day. Many people, children and adults alike, went to movie theaters to watch his short cartoons. This was just the beginning of his success! One day, he came up with a brilliant idea, one that would change the world. He decided that he was going to be the first person to create a full-length animated film. He hired only the best cartoonists in all the world to help create this masterpiece. He settled down to work and four years later he had finished "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." It was a lot of hard work, but he stuck with it, refused to quit, and became nationally recognized. The movie was a hit! After that, Walt Disney continued to make many more long cartoons: "Bambi," "Cinderella," "101 Dalmations," "Alice in Wonderland," "The Lion King," "Aladin," and the list goes on. He created "Mary Poppins," a movie with both real live people and cartoons. Later, he created Disneyland and Walt Disney World amusement parks, where even adults can have fun and act like a kid again. He did not live to see Walt Disney World completed. Although Walt Disney is no longer with us, his company still continues to create numerous movies. This just goes to show you that you can change the world in some way. Whether it be big or small, right in your own town, or all across the nation, it can be done. I feel that Walt Disney is a perfect example of this. He had a wonderful imagination, and a lot of motivation, and look what happened. He had an idea and went with it. He is and always will be one of the biggest parts of our history, ever!
